Do We Have a Cosmic Purpose?

Do you believe you have a cosmic purpose? Are you aware of some mission that you feel you need to complete while you are here on Earth?

I was reading today that we each have a cosmic purpose--a reason for being here.

I don't know for sure if that is true or not, but what I do know is that I went through a period in my own life during my 40's when I was preoccupied with the thought of "Is this it? Is this all there is?"

I suspect most of us have those moments when we question why we are here and what it all means.

There are those who argue that the universe is random. There is no meaning, We are here as some sort of fluke and our lives are meaningless.

I don't like that theory much.

There are also those who argue that we are here because God got bored and decided to create Adam and Eve and gave them free will so he could watch their antics with bemusement. According to some traditional beliefs, God intervenes as he sees fit when called upon by believers and in the end, he's going to save some and let others perish in the fires of Hell.

I don't like that theory much, either.

That's why I subscribe to a less traditional but for me, more satisfying explanation. That is that God and the Universe are One and inseparable as well as Infinite in its wisdom and power. Furthermore, we are each individualized expressions of the substance made up of the Universe. At our basic core, we are each made up of atoms. Atoms organize themselves in different ways, but at the basic core, everything in the universe is made up of those atoms.

We are all connected. How could we not be? But because we are individuals, we express ourselves differently and we see each other as "Other" not as "Brother."

If we have a cosmic purpose, perhaps at its core is the need to come to the realization that we are not nearly as different from one another as we sometimes feel we are. We may be different colors and come from different countries and speak different languages, but we all have certain things in common.

We are all born in more or less the same fashion. We all have a mother and father. We cry when we are hurt. We laugh when we are happy. I think that happens in every culture and country.

We bleed when we are wounded. We lash out when we are angry.

We often feel alone, but we aren't ever really alone. Not when you think about it.

If we have a cosmic purpose, perhaps it is to get in touch with our need to love and be loved. As human beings, we all have that in common. Could it be that finding and creating love in our lives is our cosmic purpose?

I don't know. What do you think?

Until next time.
