New Year Resolution 2020 Targeting List

Goals, whether for the new year or any time, tend to fall into different categories or areas.

For example, many people have health and fitness goals. They want to lose a few pounds or they decide they need to exercise more--or both.

Then there are relationship goals. We tend to get complacent at times and we need to pay attention to our significant others. Single folks will sometimes decide that their goal is to find a great new relationship. Some folks who are in bad relationships set their goal to get out of the situation.

There are also financial goals that need to be set at times. Planning for retirement, for example, or creating a new budget to account for an addition to the family.

And then there are spiritual goals. Do you have a spiritual practice or belong to a like-minded community?

Finally, there are career goals. They fall into a category of their own because we spend a lot of our lives engaged in our careers.

What are my career goals?

And because that is true, it is important to set goals that keep you on track in your career.

If you feel like 2020 is your year to tend specifically to your career goals, I urge you to consider the following:

  • Are there areas in which your career is not working well for you?

  • If so, what specifically isn't working?

  • And what IS working?

  • Consider your ultimate end goal. Do you want to be able to retire earlier? Work fewer hours? Or do you want more power and autonomy in your career?

  • What is your ultimate end goal?

  •  After you have explored the areas in your life, it may help you to create a plan of action.

  • Remember that in the past, I have recommended that you set SMART goals in specific areas of your life.

Vector SMART goals concept

  • Once you have developed a plan, start taking action if you are serious and want to see results.

  • Take one small action step each day to help you start gaining some momentum.

Taking some small action every day will break the inertia that you may have been experiencing. We all sometimes get stuck in ruts. Breaking out of those ruts can feel very challenging at times, especially at first.

So, let me ask you. Are you seriously considering making a career change this year?

Is 2020 the year in which you decide to finally take control of your professional life?

take control of your career
