Are You Waiting for Perfection?

The message for this week is to stop waiting for things to be perfect before you pursue your life's dream or fulfill your life's purpose.

I have been profoundly moved in the last few days by the senseless loss of two young people who were murdered on live television in the county where I grew up and from the city I called home for over two decades. In spite of the fact that I have been away from the Roanoke Valley for 15 years already, Franklin County is where I grew up, and Roanoke County is where I lived and worked for 25 years. The news of the tragedy that struck WDBJ Television and the families and loved ones of the young people who were killed while doing their jobs has left me profoundly sad. I am weary of the seemingly endless news of lives cut short by gun violence in this country, but this particular incident really hit close to home. I was just in Franklin County just this weekend. My brother and sister and I drove through that part of the county twice on our way to visit a cousin who has bought a lovely winery in Bedford County. On the way back, we stopped in Moneta to grab a drink.

I have been profoundly sad over this incident. It also reminds me, however, that life is fleeting, and none of us know how much time we have. That brings me to the real message of the day...

Are you waiting for the stars to align or for some outside circumstance to become "perfect" before you start doing the thing(s) you want to do in your secret heart of hearts? Are you waiting to be the perfect weight? Are you waiting for the perfect relationship? Are you waiting for the perfect job? Have you fallen into the habit of thinking that everything must be "perfect" before you can be truly happy? If so, I want to say to you that you should wait no longer.

You know that I love Louise Hay and her positive affirmations. I drew a card from her "Wisdom Cards" to help me support this message. It reads, "If I wait until I become perfect before I love myself, I will waste my whole life. I am already perfect right here and right now." The flip side of the card says, "I am perfect exactly as I am."

What a great reminder that we are all perfect, just as we are and we need not wait for perfection because it is already at hand.

Are you waiting for something? Do you think you can't be happy until you are the perfect weight or have met the perfect mate. Then I urge you to stop waiting. Embrace the idea that you are already perfect and everything around you is perfect and all you have to do to live the life of your dreams is accept that and keep moving toward whatever it is that you want with your secret heart of hearts. Whatever it is, it is yours for the taking, but you have to be willing to take action.

If you know what you want but you are stuck in inertia, let me know. Perhaps we could work on that together.

If you don't know what you want because you have gotten bogged down in the nitty gritty of everyday life, let me know that, too. Maybe you just need a little encouragement to get you unstuck.

Have a glorious week. Remember, life is short and your time is precious. Spend it with loved ones and doing what you love. You don't get do-overs. Live the life you want right now.

Until next time.
